SYNOPSIS

Each episode of Discovering Rhythms explores a different country and its 2-3 prominent music styles, delving into the history, adaptations, and crafting of the instruments.

 

The series will feature in-depth interviews with locals and well-known musicians, capturing raw and authentic music in various settings to demonstrate how music permeates everyday life.

 

The host will engage with locals, learn about their music styles, and participate in creating music, providing a personal and immersive experience for viewers.

 

While music is the main focus, the show will highlight the surrounding elements such as food, religion, art, clothing, architecture, rituals, dance, and more.

EPISODE STRUCTURE

- OPENING

In the first episode, we introduce our host in a thrilling and dynamic way, highlighting his iconic status and rich musical history.
We set the stage for each episode by offering a glimpse of the location and its rich culture. This is paired with an atmospheric, grandiose opening scene or an intriguing music-related event. The viewer is introduced to the episode's location and gets a taste of its character, personality, and the people's mindset, highlighting their personal connection to the featured music. With a teaser of the exciting content to come, we close the opening with a classic rhythm from the country. As the music abruptly stops, the name of the country appears in bold letters, leading seamlessly into the series intro.

We delve into the country's history, exploring key facts and events that are intertwined with its musical heritage. This historical journey naturally leads us to the introduction of the first music genre, seamlessly bridging the past with the present.

By showcasing archival footage, we immerse ourselves in the origins of the music genre, offering a vivid glimpse into its beginnings and early development. At this point, we introduce key figures in the country's music scene. These guests, who act almost as co-hosts for the episode, will discuss the genre, its instruments, and its cultural significance while playing music with locals in iconic locations.

Traveling through significant parts of the country, our host and co-host guide us through the rich culture and key elements that shape its traditions and music. They immerse themselves in the local food, religion, rituals, dance, and more, gaining a deep understanding of how these elements influence the music genre. This allows the audience to truly engage with the country's unique and captivating way of life. Viewers are introduced to fascinating and mind-blowing traditions, drawing them deeper into the vibrant culture.

- EPILOGUE

As the journey through the country comes to a close, our host and co-host reflect on the rich tapestry of culture, traditions, and music they have experienced. They revisit the key elements that shape the music genre, from the vibrant dances and rituals to the flavorful food and deeply rooted religious practices. - Guest one: We feature the renowned musician Seu Jorge, whose journey from living on the streets to becoming one of Brazil's most celebrated artists is both inspiring and deeply connected to Samba. His story reflects the themes of struggle and daily life that are prevalent in many classic Samba songs, often written by workers like construction laborers, plumbers, and mechanics.

- Musical Performance: Seu Jorge performs a full song, surrounded by the vibrant life of Rio's streets or in iconic Samba venues like small tucked in bars on the streets the “botecos’’ This performance captures the essence of Samba and its roots in the everyday experiences of the people.

ACT III

- Traveling through the iconic landscapes of Brazil, our host guides us through the rich tapestry of its culture and the key elements that shape its traditions, particularly Samba. This is where we immerse ourselves in the deep-rooted culture of Brazil.

 

- We begin with Candomblé, a religion that means "dance in honor of the gods." It combines elements from African cultures, including Yoruba, Bantu, and Fon, along with aspects of Catholicism and indigenous South American beliefs. Here, we uncover the profound connection between African heritage and Brazilian culture, observing how the instruments of Samba are adaptations of African styles.

- Focusing on 2-3 main instruments, we delve into their significance and craftsmanship. We'll explore the "cavaquinho," a small guitar; the "cuica," a friction drum; and the "pandeiro," a type of tambourine. Alongside these instruments, we'll showcase traditions and rituals like dances and "Capoeira," an Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends dance, acrobatics, music, and spirituality. We'll see how some instruments used in Capoeira circles are adapted for Samba. This segment introduces another major figure in Samba: Jorge Ben Jor. His deep connection with African music seamlessly aligns with our narrative. We'll introduce him in a mysterious way, starting with a close-up shot of his hand picking up a guitar and beginning to play, slowly zooming out to reveal him and his iconic rhythms.
